Collection 04 — One Year In, Building the Core

Client: Stay Driven
Founder: Patrick James
Project: Collection 04 — Brand, Apparel, Campaign & Creative Direction

The Challenge

A year into Stay Driven, the pattern was clear. Themed drops worked. They sold, they built community, and they gave the brand an identity. But a brand made entirely of themed drops starts from zero every release, and there's a ceiling to that.

C4 had two jobs. Mark the first year by going back to what worked, and lay the first stone of something permanent.

Patrick also wanted to change how the brand was being seen. Stay Driven was building a following, but there's a difference between a merch line and a label, and a lot of that difference is in how the work is presented. That meant investing properly in content for the first time.

The Process

Key Steps:

  • Reimagining the Best Sellers
Went back through C1 and the drops since, and rebuilt the pieces that had earned it. The 911 tee, the Race Department prints, and the others that sold out first. Not reprints. Every design was reworked and redrawn, then put on new garments in new colourways, so returning customers got something genuinely new and anyone who missed the first time got a second chance.

  • Introducing the First Core Piece
Developed the black SD logo crewneck as the brand's first permanent item. Simple, wearable, and not tied to a theme, which is exactly the point. It's the piece someone buys when they just want to wear the brand.

  • Collection Forecasting & Moodboarding
Planned the range around both halves of the collection, so the anniversary pieces and the core item read as one drop rather than two ideas sharing a launch date.

  • Print & Logo Design
Developed the full redesigned print suite.

  • Blank Sourcing
Sourced all blanks for the range.

  • Production & Finishing
Screen printed, relabelled, then picked, folded, bagged and tagged every item individually.

  • Creative Direction & Content Planning
Added creative direction as part of the scope for the first time. Built a short-form content plan positioning Stay Driven as a label rather than a merch line, and worked with videographer Kazra to produce it. (Confirm Kazra's preferred credit and that he's happy to be named.)

The Result

C4 gave Stay Driven its first permanent product and a clear direction for everything that follows. From here, every drop carries a core piece alongside the themed range, so the brand stays accessible year round instead of only being available in bursts.

Four drops in, and the brand is still growing. That's the part that matters.

What Comes Next

C5 brings the biggest change yet. Through C4 we ran into quality issues with blank supply, the kind that show up as inconsistency between units rather than anything obvious at the point of order. So for C5 we're changing suppliers entirely.

This is the part of the job clients don't always see coming. It would be easier to keep ordering from the same big-name blank suppliers everyone uses and deal with the variance. But a brand that's building toward a permanent core range can't afford inconsistency in the product people are buying repeatedly. So we said so, and we're changing it.

That's what we're for. Not just executing the order, but telling a client when the foundation underneath it needs to move.
